Born from the original swing, the Lindy Hop, dancers took the dance they already knew and adjusted it to fit the newest and coolest music that hit the scene. It is said that dancers created a stylistic variation of the “Los Angeles” style of Lindy Hop and slotted it (danced it on a straight line) and began to dance it to a variety of music including blues, rock & roll, country western, pop, hip hop, to the cool jazz, and funk music. Considered the sophisticated style of all swing dances, West Coast Swing is now danced around the world by tens of thousands of swing dance enthusiast both socially and on the swing competition circuit.

Think of Hustle as a disco swing. Detroit Hustle, a hybrid of swing & Latin dancing first emerges in mainstream social dance in1977’s after John Travolta introduced what is known as the Tango Hustle in the 1977 movie, Saturday Night Fever. Detroit Hustle comes to the scene after the swing & Latin dance eras and has been influenced by the hip action in Latin dancing and hand holds and body positions from the swing dances. Detroit Hustle dancers added a slotted method borrowed from West Coast Swing during the time it evolved in Metro Detroit. This versatile dance form can be danced to music from the 1950’s forward and dancers today are now putting it to classical music creating a new form of Hustle called New Age Hustle.
